NATURE TRAILS
AND HIKES
Muskoka
offers a variety of easy to challenging cycling trails. Each route
provides
a different and exciting experience, whether you’re looking for an easy
family outing, or a challenging mountain-biking adventure.
Please remember
that the trails are hiking trails-not walking trails. While they are relatively
easy, they may represent a challenge to some. Wet areas exist on some trails,
especially in springtime, so appropriate footwear is recommended. Please
also note that some of the trails are shared with snowmobiles, and therefore
should NOT be used for walking during the snowmobiling season. As many
trails cross private land and unspoiled territory, please stay on the trails
and help keep them unspoiled so everyone can enjoy their Muskoka hiking
experience. Information is provided by the Muskoka Recreational Trails
Council. For a detailed hiking brochure call Muskoka Tourism at 1-800-267-9700.
Muskoka
is connected to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans by the Trans-Canada Trail.
This 16,000 km trail is the longest trail on earth and runs right through

Muskoka
is fast becoming North America’s next great golf destination. With its
rugged lands and beautiful scenery, golfing in Muskoka is an extraordinary
experience. For the ultimate challenge, Muskoka offers some great public
and semi-private 18-hole courses. Many courses have been designed by leading
course designers such as Thomas McBroom, Mark O’Meara, Curtis Strange and
Nancy Lopez to name but a few. Most of the 9-hole layouts will seriously
test the ability of today’s recreational golfer. The layouts are beautifully
treed, encompass many water hazards, and are not lacking any well-placed
fairway and green-side bunkers. Accuracy will be imperative, so you might
want to leave that driver in the bag.
All-inclusive
holiday golfing packages are offered at many resorts. Take the time to

At the turn
of the century steamboats plied the lakes immediately around Huntsville
and the large neighbouring Lake of Bays. The steamboats were responsible
for transporting freight and passengers to the bustling town of Huntsville,
and local resorts.
The Portage
Railway provided the essential land link with1-1/8 miles (2.5 kilometres)
of narrow gauge track, over the height of land between Peninsula Lake and
Lake of Bays. This railway was the smallest commercial railway in the world,
operating from 1904 to 1958. The Portage Flyer steam train was instrumental
in developing tourism in the local area, and continues now as a heritage
attraction.

and telegraph station. A beautifully clean and quiet 1928 steam train,
the Portage Flyer, transports passengers back in time as they travel along

VISIT ALGONQUIN PARK: ONTARIO'S "CROWN JEWEL"
Algonquin Park is Ontario's oldest and largest provincial park. Easily
accessible from major centres in eastern Canada and the U.S., the park
is a canoeist's, camper's and naturalist's paradise.
Covering approximately 8000 square kilometers (3500 square miles) of
rugged Canadian Shield country, the park is home to an abundant wildlife
population, including moose, wolves and black bears. While many Algonquin
visitors see moose, the latter two creatures are less common sights. During
late August and into the fall, people who try howling for wolves are often
rewarded with a mournful response from a nearby pack. Smaller mammals like
otters, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and raccoons are common sights. Over
250 bird species have been recorded in Algonquin Park and everyone's favorite
wilderness bird, the common loon, is found nesting on most lakes.
A canoe tripper could spend a lifetime exploring Algonquin Park. Over
1500 km of canoe routes follow lakes, streams and portage trails through
the vast forested interior. Campsites and portages are marked and well
maintained. Fly-ins are prohibited. Motor boats are restricted to a few
lakes and road access to the park is limited to the Hwy. 60 "corridor"
and peripheral access points. As a result, most of Algonquin Park is only
accessible by canoe. Backpacking and day hiking trails allow travel on
foot. In the winter the park is also open to travel by ski and snowshoe.
If you don't feel quite ready for venturing into the park interior,
12 drive-in campgrounds offer visitors a slightly different camping experience.
Most of the campgrounds are along the Hwy. 60 corridor, with easy access
to park facilities, day canoe trips, hiking trails and other activities.
However, you don't have to be a canoeist, or even a camper, to enjoy
Algonquin Park. Many people stay at lodges and resorts outside the park
and enjoy day excursions in the park. Canoe and kayak day rentals are available
at all four Algonquin Outfitters bases for shorter outings.
The Minnesing mountain bike trail is a great ride for fat tire fans
and the Old Rail Line trail offers a more sedate riding experience (and
yes, we rent mountain bikes at both our Oxtongue Lake and Opeongo bases).
There are picnic areas, beautiful sand beaches, day hikes and some
amazing scenery to be seen. The Algonquin Visitor Centre is a "must see"
for any Algonquin visitor.
